Rove (CNC015)

azaretski On Rove, SK.EIN develops the authentic field-recordings-focused dark-ambient/drone/industrial mix of Crossfades into an even more varied and evocative record. It starts with a beautiful arrangement of a recording of a Belarusian folk song about the longing for one's homeland. A sequence of wistful images follows, embraced by various music genres, from atmospheric drum and bass to drone and noise, all weaved with an ambient thread into a distinct record. Good headphones are recommended. Favorite track: Berdiansk.

Jakub Knera Field recordings, ambient motifs, evolving rhythmic forms, and even post-rock interludes run through Rove. Sometimes it reminds me of UNKLE, although SK.EIN has a heavier sound, full of suffocating darkness, balanced out either with the light sound of a guitar or with Belarussian folklore elements. The result is a varied and colourful album, like a peculiar soundtrack to an imaginary film.

about

Belarusian artist SK.EIN presents his second album Rove.

Imagine a picture, a partially overexposed analogue archive photo. In this picture there is a vast expanse bathed in the evening sun, an endless field with a forest on the horizon and the expectation of a long hike away from home. Welcome to Rove - a trip, movie, dream and an album.

The endless hike as a metaphor formed the basis of Rove as well as gathered both transcendental and sensual experiences, children's dreams and adult journeys. The nine tracks of the album are, on the one hand, a kind of personal archive of the wanderer, turned into music, and on the other hand, a fragment of a contour map of a certain common world and a common unconscious. A map that everyone can fill out in their own way until death.

The deliberate cross-genre nature of the music turns the album into a set of live audio postcards (each track is linked to the specific place on the planet, marked with coordinates). You can hear echoes of dub, folk, drum’n’bass, psychedelic post-rock, trip-hop and even black metal. The sound palette of the artist, known from his previous ambient album Crossfades, is much richer now. No one should be surprised if DJ Shadow, UNKLE and Sigur Rós would come to mind while listening to Rove.

In general, all expressive means — lengthy guitar parts, atmospheric field recordings, distorted and shredded drum loops, creeping strings and synthesizers, and even songs of Belarusian folklore — have become elements of translucent, shimmering pictures with a special vibe. Pictures somewhere from the periphery of reality, from the border of sleep and consciousness.
